UPDATE: The annual Cause 4 Paws fundraiser has just raised over $20,000 to support SAFE Broome, an organization dedicated to rescuing animals and preventing euthanasia. This remarkable achievement was announced following the event held at Matso’s Brewery on August 9, 2023, which drew large crowds throughout the day.
The community’s response was overwhelming, demonstrating the power of local support. Families enjoyed live music, face painting, and children’s activities, while eagerly participating in a silent disco, raffles, and an exciting online auction. Major auction prizes included a scenic flight with Air Kimberley and exquisite pearl jewelry from Willie Creek Pearls and Allure South Sea Pearls. Prizes also featured luxury accommodation at Moonlight Bay Suites and artwork from Broome Gallery.
Volunteers showcased animals currently in foster care, encouraging community members to foster, fundraise, or adopt. Sonya Debenham, the Broome branch coordinator of SAFE, expressed gratitude for the community’s generosity, noting that the funds will significantly aid in covering the monthly veterinary expenses, which can reach between $10,000 and $15,000.
“It was an awesome result — we’re really happy about that. Most of the money is going to go towards vet expenses,” Debenham stated. “The adoption fees don’t quite cover it, but this event gives us a big boost.” She also highlighted the need for more foster carers, stating, “We’re always desperately short of foster carers. So if anyone wants to help out by fostering an animal, that would be fantastic.”
The success of the Cause 4 Paws event not only illustrates community spirit but also emphasizes the ongoing need for support in animal welfare. For those looking to contribute, donations can be made directly on the SAFE Broome website. Additionally, the organization accepts Containers for Change donations to further assist their mission.
As the demand for animal rescue services continues, the community’s engagement remains crucial. The next steps for SAFE Broome involve not only the use of the funds raised but also ongoing outreach to recruit more foster carers and volunteers.
