UPDATE: In a stunning finish, Corey Rocchiccioli propelled Western Australia to a dramatic one-wicket victory over Queensland in the Sheffield Shield, marking WA’s first win of the season. With just one wicket remaining and 23 runs needed, Rocchiccioli struck the winning runs off Michael Neser, finishing unbeaten on 24 runs in an electrifying final session.

Rocchiccioli’s all-round performance was nothing short of heroic, following a stellar bowling display where he claimed five wickets to set the chase at 272 runs. This victory not only keeps WA’s season alive but also validates captain Sam Whiteman’s bold declaration in the first innings, despite a challenging 68-run deficit.

Earlier today, Whiteman celebrated his 100th Test match with a commendable 81 runs, but his efforts nearly fell victim to a late collapse that saw WA lose 5 wickets for 69 runs. Despite this, Rocchiccioli, along with last man Cameron Gannon who contributed an essential 10 not out, ensured a memorable milestone for Whiteman.

The match, held at Gabba, unfolded dramatically as Rocchiccioli continued to shine. He secured the five-wicket haul by dismissing Xavier Bartlett, caught on the boundary, and later wrapped up the innings with Tom Whitney falling for a duck.

WA got off to a rocky start, but the partnership between Whiteman and Cameron Bancroft provided some stability with a solid 74-run opening stand. Whiteman’s early nerves were evident as it took him 22 balls to score his first run, but he soon found his rhythm. In contrast, Bancroft appeared confident until an inswing delivery from Bartlett saw him trapped lbw.

The tension escalated as WA faced the Queensland bowling attack, which employed a short-ball strategy reminiscent of Ben Stokes’ performance. Cam Green, preparing for the upcoming Ashes, fell for 17 runs in a disappointing dismissal, leaving WA needing 109 runs with only six wickets in hand as the final session approached.

Whiteman’s steadying presence was crucial, but when he fell to a short ball with 92 runs still required, WA’s hopes appeared to dwindle. However, the resilience shown by Rocchiccioli and Gannon turned the tide, allowing WA to clinch a remarkable victory in the dying moments of the match.

This thrilling win not only revitalizes WA’s season but also serves as a significant boost heading into the next fixtures. Fans and players alike will be watching closely as the team seeks to build on this momentum. More updates to follow.
