UPDATE: The Craigieburn Eagles are just one win away from the grand final after a thrilling victory over West Coburg in the Essendon District Football League division 1 finals. The Eagles triumphed with a score of 8.9 (57) to 5.15 (45) on Sunday, showcasing their impressive form as they continue their playoff run.
Entering the finals as one of the hottest teams, Craigieburn first defeated fourth-placed Avondale Heights before eliminating second-placed West Coburg. Eagles football manager expressed overwhelming pride, stating, “We’re absolutely elated. It was a great win and a really gutsy win after a good start.”
The match unfolded as a tense defensive battle. Craigieburn led by 20 points at the first break, but West Coburg fought back, narrowing the margin to just one point by the final quarter. Despite West Coburg having a scoring breeze, the young Eagles displayed resilience, kicking three crucial goals to secure the win.
Nathan Stewart emerged as a standout performer, being the only multiple goal-scorer for the Eagles with two goals. “The last quarter was super gritty,” said assistant coach Andrews, praising the backline led by Jai Robinson and Ben Fynch.
Craigieburn now prepares to face Hillside in the preliminary final, following Hillside’s defeat to Oak Park in the other semi-final. Earlier this season, Craigieburn bested Hillside by 59 points in their last matchup, giving them confidence heading into the upcoming game.
Andrews confirmed, “We’re not going there to not win it.” As the Eagles gear up for this crucial match, the excitement and energy within the team are palpable, promising an electrifying showdown in the finals.
With the stakes higher than ever, fans are eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Craigieburn’s remarkable playoff journey. Stay tuned for further updates as the Eagles aim for glory!
