URGENT UPDATE: Western Australia is facing severe conditions as Tropical Cyclone Mitchell unleashes winds of up to 170 km/h on the North West Cape. The storm, which has been downgraded to a Category Two system, continues to pose a significant threat to the coastline and nearby communities.
Residents in the small resort town of Exmouth, with fewer than 3,000 permanent inhabitants, are bracing for the worst as the cyclone approaches. Exmouth Shire president Matthew Niikkula described the town’s eerie calmness, stating, “I haven’t seen the town looking so clean and tidy for as long as I can remember.” He warned that the conditions could be “extremely frightening” as the storm approaches.
The Bureau of Meteorology reports that while the cyclone’s intensity has decreased, it remains dangerous. Senior meteorologist Angus Hines highlighted that “the wind has been most powerful and impressive so far,” particularly affecting offshore islands.
A Watch and Act warning is currently in effect from Onslow to Coral Bay, including Exmouth and the popular Ningaloo region. Mitchell is expected to track southeast, impacting areas such as Carnarvon, Denham, and Gascoyne Junction on Monday, October 16, 2023.
Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms could lead to flash flooding, and authorities predict significant road closures that may isolate entire communities. “The very strong wind gusts, exceeding 150 km/h, could bring down entire trees, damage property, and cause significant power outages in the northwestern corner of the country,” warned Hines.
As the cyclone moves inland, it is anticipated to weaken to a Category One system by late Monday. However, this weather system is expected to linger in Western Australia, sliding southwards through the interior as a decaying threat through Wednesday.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for potential emergencies as Cyclone Mitchell continues to impact Western Australia. This developing situation requires immediate attention, and updates will follow as new information becomes available.
