Demons Appoint Reid Gordon as Coach in Urgent Shake-Up

UPDATE: In a dramatic announcement, the Lockhart Demons have appointed star midfielder Reid Gordon as their new head coach, effective immediately. This urgent change comes as the Demons aim to build on their recent success after reaching the finals for the second consecutive year.

Gordon, 26, replaces Andy Jones, who led the team to their first finals win since 2009. Jones will now coach the club’s thirds side, marking a significant shift in leadership at the Demons. The decision was revealed during the club’s presentation night last Friday, leaving fans buzzing with excitement about the future.

Having joined the Demons last year with a notable reputation, Gordon proved his worth by winning the club’s best and fairest award this season. He has previously played for several teams, including Rochester, Marrar, Wagga Tigers, and Noosa, where he gained valuable coaching experience under former AFL player Adrian Fletcher.

In a heartfelt statement, Gordon expressed his initial apprehension about taking on such a significant role at a young age. “I was a little bit nervous initially, but once I made the decision to coach, it was like the weight had been lifted from my shoulders,” he said. His excitement is now palpable as he prepares to lead the Demons in the upcoming season.

The Demons’ journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Just three years ago, the club faced the prospect of folding due to a severe player shortage. After a winless season in 2022, the team has rebounded impressively, making the finals in both 2023 and 2024. Gordon acknowledged the hard work of previous coaches, stating, “Tom and Andy have done a power of work… The club has been on an upward spiral since collecting the wooden spoon in 2022.”

Looking ahead, Gordon’s primary goal is to maintain the momentum built by his predecessors. “I certainly don’t want the club to go backward while I’m in charge,” he affirmed. He is optimistic about retaining most of the current players while adding new talent to strengthen the squad.

Gordon shared insights into the team’s status, noting, “The list is looking positive in regards to player retention… From word of mouth and most of the conversations I’ve had with the playing group, they will stay on again for next year.” His focus is on securing a few more recruits to enhance the team’s depth.

The impact of this leadership change is already being felt. Gordon believes that winning a final this season has instilled a sense of self-belief in the squad. He noted the competitiveness against teams like Osborne and Holbrook, emphasizing, “We feel we are more than competitive against them when we have a full list to choose from.”

In reflecting on the last finals campaign, he acknowledged the challenges faced, including key injuries and illnesses that hindered their performance. “We had five or six players test positive for influenza… We only had half-a-side rock up to training,” he explained. He underscored the importance of luck in achieving postseason success, something the team lacked.

As the Hume League coaching landscape shifts, Reid Gordon’s appointment is a pivotal moment for the Demons. With only the Murray Magpies yet to announce their new coach, the league is preparing for an exciting season ahead.

Fans and players alike are eager to see how Gordon’s leadership will shape the future of the Lockhart Demons. As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on the club to see if they can build on their recent successes and continue their ascent in the Hume League.
