UPDATE: The Shire of Derby-West Kimberley has just finalized a lease for a hangar at Derby Airport to Frontier Helicopters, marking a significant development nearly three years after the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) vacated the premises. The lease was awarded during the September council meeting, led by Commissioner Jeff Gooding.
This urgent move comes as the Shire faced limited options, with only two submissions received for the hangar lease. Commissioner Gooding revealed, “We have been out for expressions of interest… but effectively, we’ve only got one in the end.” The decision reflects a critical need to utilize the vacant facility, which has been unoccupied since December 2022 when the RFDS opted not to extend their 10-year lease.
Under the new agreement, Frontier Helicopters will occupy the hangar for a term of five years, with the potential to extend for an additional five years. The annual lease fee is set at $26,700 plus goods and services tax, payable quarterly in advance. The company will also bear all operational and utility costs associated with the lease.
Previously, the hangar served as a vital base for the RFDS, providing essential medical transport services to remote areas. Following its departure, the Shire briefly utilized the building for administrative purposes before it was declared vacant again in early to mid 2024.
This lease agreement not only revitalizes the hangar’s use but also promises to enhance local tourism through scenic helicopter tours, potentially boosting the economy of Derby. As the community awaits further developments, the Shire aims to ensure the facility serves its intended purpose effectively.
The decision to lease the hangar is a pivotal step for the Shire, and officials are optimistic about the future of Derby Airport as it reestablishes critical operations. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
