DPC Roosters Secure Back-to-Back Titles with 30-22 Victory

UPDATE: The DPC Roosters clinched their second consecutive title in a thrilling showdown against the Hay Magpies, winning 30-22 in the grand final held on July 15, 2023. This victory marks their third championship in the last five seasons, solidifying their dominance in the league.

The match started with a 40-minute delay due to an injury during the women’s tackle grand final, but once underway, it showcased intense competition. The Hay Magpies, having surpassed expectations throughout the finals series, initially took the lead when Brad Pocock converted a crossfield kick into a try for Hugh Crighton. However, the Roosters quickly responded, with Joey Peato scoring after a swift transition across the field to equalize the score at 14 minutes.

Despite losing key player Guy Thompson temporarily due to a heavy knock, the Roosters built momentum, with Jon Huggett adding another try. The Magpies countered with a strong effort from Kynan Headon, leading to a tense first half that ended in a 12-12 deadlock after both teams suffered injuries to pivotal forwards.

The second half began with both teams trading leads, as the Magpies scored through Toby Crighton and Brad Pocock. Yet, Isaac Railo replied for the Roosters with an intercept try, followed by a successful conversion from Josh Veivers to give them a narrow lead. With just over nine minutes left in the match, Tom Fattore extended the Roosters’ lead, pushing the margin beyond a try.

Despite a valiant push from the Magpies, the Roosters’ defense held firm, securing their victory and back-to-back championships. Roosters coach Guy Thompson described this win as the hardest of his three premierships, acknowledging the impressive performance of the Hay club.

“I think they were probably the better side for the first 60 minutes, but the last 20, we were able to grind it out,” Thompson stated. He credited the team’s resilience, especially in defense during the final moments of the game.

In a standout performance, Ben Jeffery was awarded the Barry Hails Medal for his impactful play after coming on in the first half. Thompson praised Jeffery’s contributions, highlighting his experience and pivotal role in changing the game dynamics.

This thrilling match not only showcased the competitive spirit of both teams but also highlighted the emotional investment of players and fans alike. As the Roosters celebrate their hard-fought victory, all eyes will be on next season to see if they can continue their championship legacy.

Stay tuned for further updates and analyses on this gripping match and its implications for the future of the league.
