UPDATE: Dubai’s innovative e-commerce platform has just been hailed as a global benchmark by the World Customs Organization (WCO) in a newly released trilingual report. This recognition underscores Dubai’s leadership in customs innovation and its pivotal role in transforming digital commerce and logistics.
The report, released today, confirms that Dubai Customs stands as a model for effective digital transformation in customs services worldwide. This development is crucial as it highlights the UAE’s booming e-commerce sector, which reached a staggering AED 32.3 billion ($8.8 billion) in 2024 and is projected to soar to AED 50.6 billion ($13.8 billion) by 2029.
The impressive growth of goods transported through Dubai, both by sea and air, aligns with the ambitious D33 vision that aims to position Dubai as a premier global hub for economic expansion driven by logistics and digital commerce. This e-commerce platform not only supports local businesses but also creates thousands of jobs, directly impacting the lives of residents and fostering a vibrant economic environment.
Officials at Dubai Customs are actively working to convert 20–30% of low-value e-commerce shipments to this platform. Through collaborations with multinational express couriers and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), they are ensuring all stakeholders benefit from enhanced trade facilitation.
At a press conference today, Juma Al Ghaith, Advisor to the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of Artificial Intelligence at Dubai Customs, articulated the significance of this global recognition. He stated,
“The World Customs Organization’s praise reflects the depth of the transformation led by Dubai Customs in the world of trade and e-commerce, and embodies the vision of our leadership in making Dubai the city of the future.”
Moreover, Atiq Al Muhairi, Executive Director of Customs Development at Dubai Customs, emphasized the platform’s role in revolutionizing cross-border trade. He commented,
“Dubai Customs’ e-commerce platform is a qualitative leap and a new benchmark in facilitating trade, linking government entities and shipping companies to streamline compliance with customs requirements.”
The platform’s influence extends across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, aligning with the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), which aims to double the economy within a decade and rank Dubai among the top three economic cities globally. This initiative positions Dubai as a top five global logistics hub, reinforcing its strategic importance in the international market.
With the WCO’s endorsement, Dubai Customs is set to lead the way in utilizing technology to enhance trade efficiency, making it a vital player in the evolving landscape of e-commerce. As the world increasingly shifts towards digital solutions, this recognition serves as a significant milestone for Dubai’s future in global commerce.
Stay tuned for further developments on this groundbreaking achievement and its implications for the future of trade and e-commerce in Dubai and beyond.
