UPDATE: A man sentenced to 18 months in prison will be released early after a profound moment of reflection led him to pledge sobriety. Mathew Honan, 47, is now eligible for release on December 13, 2025, following a court hearing that revealed his commitment to change.
Honan’s breakthrough occurred while standing in the shower, where he confronted his struggles with alcohol. “Every time I’m in trouble, alcohol seems to be the key,” he told Bega District Court Judge Miiko Kumar. His newfound determination is fueled by the recent birth of his first grandchild, which he cites as a catalyst for his desire to turn his life around.
Currently incarcerated for intimidation charges stemming from incidents on May 11, 2025, Honan has a history of alcohol abuse and previous convictions. His offenses included threatening to burn down a victim’s house and physically assaulting another. One victim described her experience in court, saying, “He was screaming at me… I was scared,” highlighting the severity of his actions.
Initially sentenced to 18 months with a nine-month non-parole period, Honan’s defense attorney, Rosie Lambert, argued that the sequential nature of his sentence was excessive. She emphasized his determination to quit drinking and his ambitions to lead a more productive life for himself and his family.
Crown prosecutor Catherine Malcolm opposed the appeal, citing Honan’s eight prior convictions and lack of rehabilitation efforts. “A 47-year-old man with a lifelong history of alcohol abuse really should have a better plan than he does,” she stated, pushing back against leniency.
After considering both sides, Judge Kumar acknowledged Honan’s self-awareness and reduced his sentence to 14 months with a seven-month non-parole period. Following the ruling, Honan expressed gratitude to his lawyer, who reminded him, “Make sure it’s a sober Christmas.”
This decision has significant implications not only for Honan but also for his family, who are eager to reunite during the holiday season. His commitment to sobriety could pave the way for a fresh start, making this a story of hope and transformation for those struggling with addiction.
As Honan prepares for his release, many will be watching to see if he can maintain his pledge and rebuild his life.
