UPDATE: Rising Australian tennis star Emerson Jones, just 17 years old, is setting her sights on breaking into the top 100 rankings this year following a promising performance at the Brisbane International. The young athlete, currently ranked No. 147 in the world, showcased her potential by defeating Germany’s Tatjana Maria, ranked No. 43, in the opening round before falling to world No. 17 Liudmila Samsonova in the second round, with a score of 6-4, 6-1.
Jones, who received a wildcard entry into the upcoming Australian Open, expressed newfound confidence from her Brisbane experience. “That round-one victory is the second top 50 win of my life,” Jones stated. She emphasized that playing against top-ranked competitors provides her with invaluable experience and confidence.
Looking ahead, Jones stated, “By the end of last year, my coach and I wanted to crack the top 150, and it was great that I got to do that right at the end. Definitely, trying to make the top 100 this year is a goal we’d love to crack.” With the Australian Open on the horizon, the stakes are high for Jones as she aims to improve her game and rankings.
In addition to her tennis ambitions, Jones is balancing her Year 12 studies, but she is committed to prioritizing her sport. “School is there. It’s not my priority, but I am going to finish school,” she said. “I don’t want to touch books after that. I am just going to focus on my tennis.”
Jones’s remarkable journey includes becoming Australia’s first junior girls world No. 1 since Jelena Dokic in 1998. Ash Barty, a tennis legend, recently praised Jones as one of the best young players she has seen, but Jones is determined to carve her own path. “Everyone compares me to Ash, but Ash has her own journey,” she noted. “I focus on myself, and that definitely works for me.”
In her match against Samsonova, Jones started strong with an immediate break, leading 3-0 before facing a pivotal moment. She had a break point opportunity to take a commanding 5-3 lead but was unable to convert. This turning point allowed Samsonova to regain momentum and ultimately serve out the set.
As the Australian Open approaches, all eyes will be on Jones as she aims to leverage her recent experiences into a breakthrough performance on a grand stage. With her sights firmly set on the top 100, tennis fans worldwide are eager to see how this talented teenager will rise to the occasion.
