UPDATE: A father’s incredible journey through cancer treatment has culminated in a heartwarming moment with his newborn son, Charlie White. Adam White, from Tower Hill, faced a life-threatening leukemia diagnosis that led him through seven rounds of chemotherapy and a heart attack, but he emerged victorious just in time to cherish moments with his child.
White shared his transformative story during the Relay for Life event in Warrnambool on February 21, 2026. The emotional ceremony highlighted the challenges he faced after his shocking diagnosis in June 2024, which came just after a routine wisdom tooth extraction.
“I woke up the next morning, couldn’t get out of bed, so I called an ambulance,” White recounted, reflecting on the harrowing start to his medical ordeal. Initially thought to be a COVID-19 infection, blood tests revealed a staggering white blood cell count of 95, prompting immediate transfer to The Alfred Hospital for treatment.
After five rounds of chemotherapy over six months, White achieved remission in November 2024. However, just as he returned to work in February 2025, he learned he was expecting a child, only to be struck by a relapse the very next day.
Faced with pneumonia, White was hospitalized again, where a blood clot caused a heart attack. “If I hadn’t been in the hospital, I wouldn’t have survived,” he stated, crediting the quick action of medical staff for saving his life.
Following additional rounds of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, White is now in full remission, a triumph he attributes to the support of his community. “Those things were pretty terrifying, but it’s all become sort of null and void after you hold your first child,” he said, capturing the emotional weight of his journey.
The Relay for Life event raised nearly $75,000 for cancer research, a testament to the community’s commitment to fighting the disease. Event organizer Jodie Carey noted, “This is the 24th Relay for Life event here, with over 300 participants already registered.”
Among the attendees was Michael Grayling, a cancer survivor who has participated in 742 Relay for Life events worldwide. Diagnosed with advanced stage three cancers at just 23 years old, Grayling emphasized the urgent need for continued awareness and funding for cancer research. “We desperately need to find a cure,” he stated passionately.
As Adam White embraces his new role as a father, his story stands as a beacon of hope and resilience amid the battle against cancer. The community’s ongoing support and events like the Relay for Life are vital in raising awareness and funding for those impacted by the disease.
