Ferntree Gully Declared Victoria’s Severe Weather Hotspot

UPDATE: New data from insurer AAMI reveals that Ferntree Gully has been officially named Victoria’s top severe weather hotspot for October. This alarming title comes amid a troubling analysis of natural disaster claims spanning from July 2022 to June 2025, highlighting the suburb’s heightened vulnerability to devastating wind, hail, and storm damage.

The findings indicate that homes and businesses in Ferntree Gully have experienced extensive destruction, leading to significant social and economic repercussions for the community. Kristian Schouten, controller of the Knox SES unit, stated that the suburb’s unique geography—situated at the base of the Dandenong Ranges—along with its dense vegetation, steep terrain, and aging infrastructure, significantly increases its risk during severe weather events.

Recent storms, particularly short and intense cells that have swept through the area, have exacerbated the situation. Schouten emphasized that factors such as untrimmed trees, blocked gutters, and inadequate emergency planning have contributed to the area’s susceptibility to damage.

The report underscores the urgent need for community preparedness. Major events that have driven insurance claims include the catastrophic floods in October and November 2022, along with destructive storms in February 2024. Following Ferntree Gully in AAMI’s rankings are Rochester, Shepparton, Mulgrave, and Mornington, all of which have also faced severe weather challenges.

In response to these findings, Knox SES has proactively engaged with the community, urging residents to take immediate steps to protect their properties. Recommended actions include clearing gutters, securing outdoor items, trimming overhanging branches, and preparing a comprehensive emergency plan and kit.

Josh Kelland from AAMI cautions that the data serves as a crucial reminder for families to prepare their homes ahead of the upcoming summer season. With severe weather patterns becoming increasingly unpredictable, community members must act swiftly to mitigate risks before the next storm hits.

As this situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay informed and remain vigilant. The time to prepare is now—take action to safeguard your home and family against the threats posed by severe weather.
