UPDATE: In a stunning display of skill and strategy, the CYMS Fishies overpowered the Orange Hawks with a decisive 44-16 victory during the Peter McDonald Premiership on July 20, 2023, at Apex Oval. The match showcased a breakout performance from substitute forward Stanley, who has quickly become a fan favorite.
The game began with a tense midfield battle, with both teams tied at 6-6 after tries from Bayden Searle and Tom Toohey. However, the Hawks’ errors allowed the Fishies to surge ahead, leading 16-6 at halftime. Stanley’s tactical entrance transformed the game, as he swiftly assisted in a try for Mitchell Cleary, who scored a remarkable hat trick during the match.
Stanley’s impact was immediate. “We went into the sheds and just had a good look at the way we were playing,” he explained. “Hawks were playing with a super wide structure, and we decided to take advantage of that.” His contributions, alongside additional tries from Billy Sing and Alex Bonham, sealed the victory with 20 minutes remaining on the clock.
As the Fishies climb to the top of the ladder with only three games left in the season, Stanley reflected on his journey from reserves to key player. “I feel like I’m really just starting to fit in at the club,” he said. “I had to start the season in the reserves and really earn my chances.” His resurgence began in round 11 against his former team, where he silenced critics with a dominant performance.
The Fishies have now scored over 40 points in four matches this season, demonstrating a relentless offensive strategy. Fullback Troyden Dixon also shone, effectively defending against the Hawks’ attempts to score, often running the ball out from deep within his territory.
With this latest victory, CYMS is eyeing potential home finals. “To see ourselves top with only a few rounds left is great,” Stanley noted. “Home finals matches would be thrilling, but we just want to win. That’s our job.” The anticipation builds as they prepare for a crucial derby match against the Macquarie Raiders, who recently beat the Lithgow Workies 40-10.
As the race for finals heats up, the Hawks, led by standout players Tom Toohey and Ryan Manning, face a tough schedule ahead against teams like Mudgee, Parkes, and Bathurst St Pats. The pressure mounts as they strive to secure their playoff position.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Fishies continue their remarkable season!
