BREAKING: Former primary school teacher Rodney Neville Watkins, aged 76, is currently on trial in the District Court of WA facing 14 charges of sexual abuse involving four students. The allegations date back to 1974-1983, a period during which Watkins allegedly committed these acts in conjunction with his now-deceased partner, Robert Lefroy.
In dramatic courtroom proceedings this week, Watkins has vehemently denied the accusations, asserting, “It didn’t happen.” His testimony follows emotional claims from alleged victims, including one tearful man who asserted he was raped by both Watkins and Lefroy during an overnight trip to Rottnest Island. The witness recounted a harrowing experience where the men purportedly entered his tent at night.
During cross-examination on October 25, 2023, prosecutor Katie Kemm questioned Watkins about the alleged incident. He responded by insisting he had never visited Rottnest Island and had “never met” the accuser. “I have no recollection of the men introducing boys to each other,” he claimed, although he did acknowledge a single instance where one complainant visited their home for a swim.
Watkins admitted he may have been naked around the pool but categorically denied any sexual acts occurring in front of the youngest alleged victim. “No, it didn’t happen,” he reiterated.
The prosecution argues that Watkins and Lefroy, who were both educators in northern suburbs schools, conspired to abuse the students. The trial continues to unfold with gripping testimonies that reveal the emotional impact on the victims.
Earlier in his testimony, Watkins discussed his relationship with Lefroy, describing their partnership as primarily a business venture, stating they purchased their house as an investment. “I didn’t have a lot to do with him. He was 15 years older than me,” Watkins remarked, emphasizing his limited interaction with Lefroy.
As the trial progresses, Watkins claims his cognitive functioning has declined since 2013, yet he maintains the innocence of the allegations against him. The court will hear more from him as he continues to present his case on October 26, 2023.
The emotional stakes are high as this trial sheds light on the lasting impact of such allegations, with survivors calling for justice. Those affected by similar issues are encouraged to reach out for help through services like Kids Helpline at 1800 55 1800.
