Fourth Measles Case Linked to Jelly Roll Concert in Brisbane

UPDATE: A fourth person has been confirmed with measles linked to the recent cluster stemming from the October 24, 2023 concert by American rapper Jelly Roll at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. This alarming development was announced by Queensland Health on Sunday morning, escalating public health concerns in the region.

The initial outbreak began when three attendees of the concert tested positive for measles on Wednesday evening, more than a week after potential exposure. The newly identified case has been infectious for approximately a week, visiting various locations in and around Logan, including the Mustang Brothers Football Club in Chambers Flat and the emergency department at Logan Hospital. These sites have now been added to the list of potential exposure locations, heightening the urgency for community awareness and vigilance.

Queensland Health issued a public health alert on Wednesday night, urging anyone who attended the concert to monitor for symptoms for up to three weeks. Symptoms can manifest as fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough, and red eyes, typically culminating in a distinctive red rash that often begins on the face. Officials stress the importance of getting tested for measles while avoiding public places if symptoms appear.

In total, 30 measles cases have been reported in Queensland this year, indicating a troubling rise in infections, as highlighted by Dr. Catherine McDougall, Queensland’s Chief Health Officer. “Currently, we’re seeing higher numbers of measles cases not only in Queensland but across the country,” she stated on Wednesday.

This situation is compounded by two additional measles cases reported in the Central Queensland West Moreton regions, unrelated to the concert. Health authorities are urging immediate action to prevent further spread, particularly as the holiday season approaches.

For anyone who may have been at the concert, vigilance is crucial. Symptoms can take up to three weeks to appear, and the potential for transmission remains high. The community is reminded to stay informed and proactive in seeking medical advice if they suspect exposure.

As the situation develops, further updates will be provided. Health officials continue to monitor the outbreak closely and will advise the public on necessary precautions and testing locations. Stay tuned for the latest developments in this evolving health crisis.
