French Police Shoot Knife-Wielding Man in Corsica Incident

UPDATE: A 26-year-old man armed with a knife has been shot dead by police in Ajaccio, Corsica, after threatening bystanders and shopkeepers earlier today. The incident escalated amidst heightened security measures as French authorities prioritize public safety during the festive season.

At approximately noon, police received a call regarding a man wielding a knife in a shop. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had fled the scene. He was later located in the city center, still brandishing the weapon. Authorities report that despite commands to drop the knife, the man refused to comply.

In an effort to subdue him, officers deployed an electrical impulse weapon, which proved ineffective. As he advanced towards them with the knife, police were forced to open fire, resulting in his death at the scene. Despite the rapid response from emergency services, the man could not be revived. One police officer sustained a minor hand injury during the confrontation.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez emphasized the need for vigilance, stating, “Security is at its highest during this festive season.” He has ordered increased public patrols across the region to ensure safety and prevent similar incidents.
