Garrick Higgo Matches Course Record, Takes Lead in Mexico Championship

URGENT UPDATE: Garrick Higgo has just matched the course record at El Cardonal in Diamante, Mexico, shooting an incredible 11-under 61 to take a one-stroke lead over Carson Young in the final round of the PGA Tour’s World Wide Technology Championship.

This astounding performance has propelled the 26-year-old South African to a total score of 22-under 194, putting him in prime position to secure another title this season. Higgo, already a winner in 2023, started strong by chipping in for eagle on the par-5 first hole. He parred the second hole before going on an impressive run, carding five consecutive birdies for a blistering 7-under 29 on the front nine.

“Hit it great, made a lot of good putts and chipped in once,” said Higgo. “Just everything was really solid and took advantage of the opportunities that I had.”

Meanwhile, Carson Young, who finished with 11 birdies and two bogeys in a 63, is determined to secure his first PGA Tour victory. “Just keep doing what I’m doing,” Young stated. “I’m excited about it because last year I finished second here and missed out by one in a playoff. Kind of feels like revenge here to be in the final group again.”

Ryder Cup rookie Ben Griffin shot a 66 to sit two strokes back, alongside Trevor Cone (65) and Chad Ramey (67). The pressure is mounting as only three tournaments remain this season, with the top 100 players in the FedEx Cup standings securing full PGA Tour cards for next year, down from 125 in previous years.

As it stands, Higgo is currently ranked 57th in the FedEx Cup standings, while Young is at 136th. Higgo previously celebrated victory at the Corales Puntacana Championship in April, marking his second PGA Tour title. “Not really anything new,” he reflected. “Just doing a lot of the same stuff.”

In a contrasting turn of events, American Luke List faced a dismal round, carding a brutal 12 on the par-4 15th hole during his round of 85. This score is now the second-highest hole score recorded on the PGA Tour this year, trailing only behind William Mouw‘s 13 on the par-5 16th at the American Express.

As the final round approaches, all eyes will be on Higgo and Young as they battle for the championship title. Golf fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating the conclusion of this thrilling tournament on the southern tip of Baja California.
