UPDATE: In a monumental shift for the Anglican Church, the Global Anglicans (GAFCON) have officially announced their withdrawal from the Anglican Communion, a decision made on October 16, 2023. This historic move comes nearly 500 years after the martyrdom of Bishops Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley, highlighting a significant moment in religious history.

The leadership of GAFCON, represented by the Most Revd Dr Laurent Mbanda, stated in an official communique, “As has been the case from the very beginning, we have not left the Anglican Communion; we are the Anglican Communion.” This declaration signals a bold reordering of Anglican identity, emphasizing a return to biblical foundations.

Key points from the GAFCON resolution outline a new structure for the Anglican Communion. The eight key tenets include:
1. A commitment to the Holy Bible as the sole foundation for communion, as noted in the Jerusalem Declaration.
2. A rejection of the existing Instruments of Communion, including the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC), which GAFCON claims have failed to uphold core doctrines.
3. A cessation of communion with those endorsing a revisionist agenda, which GAFCON believes has compromised the integrity of biblical authority.
4. A restructured fellowship of autonomous provinces guided by the historical Formularies of the Reformation.
5. A directive that provinces abstain from participating in meetings led by the Archbishop of Canterbury and discontinue financial interactions with the ACC.
6. Encouragement for provinces to amend constitutions to detach from communion with the See of Canterbury.
7. A requirement for provinces to affirm the Jerusalem Declaration of 2008 to maintain membership in the Global Anglican Communion.
8. The establishment of a Council of Primates to oversee governance and uphold doctrinal integrity.

This decisive action reflects a growing conviction among Anglicans who adhere to traditional biblical teachings. As GAFCON’s communique states, “The Future Has Arrived,” indicating a strategic pivot towards a more unified, scripture-centered Anglican community.

The implications of this withdrawal are profound, potentially reshaping the landscape of Anglicanism worldwide. With tensions rising over doctrinal disputes, GAFCON’s stance represents a call to uphold what they view as the true essence of Anglican faith, aligning with a broader movement among denominations to reaffirm scriptural authority amidst societal pressures.

As the Anglican community watches closely, this pivotal moment raises critical questions about unity and identity in an era marked by rapid change. The call for a renewed focus on biblical fidelity may resonate with many who seek clarity in their faith amidst ongoing cultural shifts.

Stay tuned for further developments as this story evolves. The impact of GAFCON’s actions will likely be felt across the global Anglican community and beyond, influencing discussions on faith, doctrine, and the future of the church.
