Goulburn Dirty Reds Celebrate Successful Old Boys Day with Big Win

UPDATE: The Goulburn Dirty Reds kicked off their inaugural Old Boys (and Girls) Day on July 19, 2023, with a resounding victory over Gungahlin, winning 46-19. This historic event not only celebrated the team’s past but also marked a pivotal moment for current players as they build momentum for the upcoming finals.

The atmosphere was electric as a large number of former players donned retro gear, uniting in nostalgia and pride. Among the highlights was the official presentation of Life Membership to Kevin “Bubby” Fitzsimmons, a long-time contributor to the club whose legacy spans decades. His induction was a fitting tribute, as he has played, coached, and managed at all levels, even serving as club president during significant developments like the opening of Poidevin Oval.

“It’s an honor to be recognized for my years with the club, and I’m grateful for everyone who has been part of this journey,” said Fitzsimmons during the ceremony.

Another notable moment was Adam Lachlan achieving his 100th game, a milestone that underscores his dedication to the team since 2010 despite interruptions due to military service. In his 100 appearances, he has scored 57 tries and is celebrated as one of the club’s greatest fullbacks.

The first-grade team’s victory against Gungahlin was crucial, keeping them in third place and providing a much-needed confidence boost as they gear up for the semifinals. Coach and players alike are optimistic about their ongoing improvement and resilience, especially with three consecutive wins under their belt.

While the men’s team thrived, the women’s side faced challenges, finishing the season with grit despite limited numbers. Their determination to play through tough circumstances has drawn support, with hopes for better recruitment next season to bolster their ranks.

Additionally, a jumper auction held during the event raised funds for the club, showcasing the strong community spirit among current and former players. A special presentation of jumper 12 was made to Gary Stephens, a 1975 grand final winner, highlighting the ongoing commitment to honoring the club’s history.

As celebrations continued into the evening, a lively rendition of the club song by both current and former players echoed through the sheds, reinforcing the strong sense of camaraderie that defines the Goulburn Dirty Reds.

This first Old Boys Day not only marked a celebration of history but also set the stage for future traditions, as the Dirty Reds aim to make it an annual event. With the finals on the horizon, the team’s performance and community support will be critical in the coming weeks.

Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates as the Dirty Reds prepare for their next match, riding the wave of this victorious day.
