Harry Dean Selected No. 3 in AFL Draft Amid Emotional Ceremony

BREAKING: Harry Dean has been officially selected as the No. 3 pick in the AFL Draft, with his father, Peter Dean, presenting him with his Carlton jumper during an emotional ceremony at Docklands Stadium on July 11, 2023. This moment marks a significant milestone for the Dean family and Carlton Football Club.

The West Coast Eagles made a serious bid for Dean at No. 3, but Carlton promptly matched the offer, ensuring the promising tall defender would join their ranks. The decision comes after Carlton had initially held the No. 9 pick, but the club was clear they would not let Dean slip away.

In a heartwarming scene, Harry, who just turned 18 last week, celebrated with his Lavington under-18 premiership teammates. FOX Footy’s Ben Dixon described the atmosphere as “one of the best celebrations,” highlighting the excitement surrounding the young athlete’s selection.

“I don’t know what to say, but it’s pretty good for the boys, pretty rowdy,” Dean stated, reflecting on the lively scene.

Peter Dean, a two-time Carlton premiership player and coach of Lavington’s championship team, expressed pride in his son’s achievements. “Very excitable, testosterone-filled bunch of fellas, good bunch of fellas,” he remarked about the young players celebrating alongside Harry.

When asked about his son’s competitive spirit, Harry humorously attributed it to his mother, saying, “It comes everywhere, get it from mum (Kerrie) mainly, not Dad,” which drew laughter from the crowd.

Harry, who wore Peter’s previous jersey number 35 at Lavington, played with 15 at the Murray Bushrangers and Victoria Country. His father praised Harry’s skills, stating, “Let the actions speak for themselves; he’s a better version of me, I suppose. He’s taller, stronger, quicker, and he’s a left-footer, so he’s got more skill.” Peter’s pride was evident as he noted his son’s growth in both sport and character.

Despite facing adversity with a shoulder fracture during his underage year, Harry has made a remarkable comeback, showcasing his talent at the AFL National Championships where he earned All-Australian selection at fullback. AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan emphasized, “He blossomed and got better and better as the year went on,” underscoring Harry’s rapid ascent in the sport.

Harry has made significant contributions in his eight games for the Murray Bushrangers, notably his senior debut for Lavington in the Ovens and Murray Football Netball League, where he achieved 14 touches, including 10 contested possessions and five marks against Albury.

Scouts have highlighted Harry’s exceptional intercept marking, ability to spoil, and proficient ball use as key attributes. His fierce competitive nature positions him as a strong contender for a round 1 debut next season.

In a competitive draft, Willem Duursma from Gippsland Power was the first overall pick to West Coast, receiving his jumper from teammate and former No. 1 pick Harley Reid. The second round of the Draft is scheduled for Thursday, with the Rookie and Pre-Season Drafts set for Friday, keeping fans eagerly anticipating the next wave of talent to be unveiled.

Stay tuned for more updates as the excitement of the AFL Draft continues to unfold.
