Hawthorn’s Mabior Chol Banned for Three Matches After Tackle

BREAKING: Hawthorn forward Mabior Chol has been handed a three-match ban following his dangerous tackle on Geelong star Tom Stewart during the preliminary final on Friday night. The AFL’s decision comes as Stewart faces 12-day concussion protocols due to the severe impact of the tackle, which occurred in the first quarter of the game.

This ruling has significant implications, as Chol would also miss the premiership decider if Hawthorn advances. The tackle has sparked renewed debate about the placement of the pre-finals bye, with many suggesting it should be moved to between the preliminary final and the grand final.

Chris Scott, Geelong’s coach, criticized the timing of the bye, describing it as an “overnight” decision by the AFL. He stated,

“I understand it’s not optimal for the AFL to have masses of players rested for inconsequential games in the last home-and-away round of the year, but I just didn’t think that was a good enough reason.”

Scott emphasized the need for clubs to have more control over scheduling, pointing out that the AFL struggled to find an appropriate time for a bye during the season before making a last-minute change.

In addition to Chol’s suspension, Hawthorn’s Jack Ginnivan has been fined $10,000 for tripping Geelong’s Jack Bowes. The penalties underscore the increasing scrutiny on player conduct as the finals approach, and the league’s commitment to player safety.

The ramifications of these decisions extend beyond the field, impacting team dynamics and fan expectations as the AFL finals unfold. With the stakes higher than ever, all eyes will be on how Hawthorn navigates this critical period without two of its key players.

As the final matches approach, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely for any further developments regarding player safety protocols and the ongoing debate surrounding the structure of the finals series.
