BREAKING: Heathrow Airport (LHR) has been crowned the world’s most connected airport for the third consecutive year, according to the latest report from OAG, released on September 24, 2025. This significant announcement comes as global travel continues to rebound, spotlighting Heathrow’s crucial role in international connectivity.
In OAG’s tenth anniversary ranking of Megahubs, Istanbul Airport (IST) has surged to the second position, climbing six places from 2024. This rapid rise is attributed to a remarkable 25% increase in potential connections, with Turkish Airlines operating an impressive 79% of its flights.
Heathrow’s dominance is underscored by a 24% growth in the number of international destinations served over the past decade, cementing its status as a vital hub for travelers worldwide. “Heathrow’s sustained dominance as a Megahub reflects its vital role in global travel,” stated John Grant, OAG’s Chief Analyst.
The report highlights an all-European top three, with Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) moving up one place to take third. In the realm of low-cost connectivity, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) shines brightly, ranking fourth overall and leading in this category, thanks to AirAsia’s 36% share of flights. Frankfurt Airport (FRA) joins KUL in fourth place, making significant strides from last year’s tenth position.
In the United States, Chicago O’Hare (ORD) has emerged as the top international hub, while JFK has dropped from sixth to fourteenth. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) closely follows ORD, securing the eighth spot.
The Middle East is also represented in the top 50, with Dubai International Airport (DXB) ranking highest at 15th. Notably, Riyadh (RUH) has climbed an impressive 11 places year-on-year, overtaking Doha (DOH).
Ross Baker, Chief Customer Officer at Heathrow, expressed pride in the airport’s achievement, stating, “This achievement reflects our global reach, the strong airline partnerships that enable it, and the benefits it brings to UK passengers and businesses.” Heathrow’s future expansion plans promise to further enhance its global connectivity, providing even more opportunities for travelers and businesses alike.
OAG’s Megahubs ranking is based on flight data from the largest international airports, analyzed on the busiest day in global aviation, August 1, 2025. This comprehensive analysis highlights the evolving landscape of air travel and the emerging players in the global market.
