UPDATE: A groundbreaking partnership has just been signed between Stockland and the Wurrundjeri Woi-Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation (WWCHAC) at Cloverton, Kalkallo, marking a historic milestone in Victoria. This landmark agreement, announced on October 24, 2023, aims to embed Wurundjeri culture deeply into the fabric of one of Melbourne’s largest master-planned communities.
This partnership builds on over a decade of collaboration and is poised to deliver joint projects that celebrate Wurundjeri heritage, stories, and values. Residents can expect initiatives focusing on cultural practices, arts, and languages, all aimed at fostering self-determination and community inclusion.
The signing ceremony took place at Cloverton’s newest park, a stunning 1.81 hectares community space co-designed with WWCHAC. The park features ancient River Red Gums, believed to be over 500 years old, and artistic elements honoring the shortfin eel and native species like the growling grass frog. This unique landscape serves as a living tribute to the rich cultural heritage of the Wurundjeri people.
The event kicked off with a traditional smoking ceremony and a welcome to country, emphasizing the significance of the day. Local students participated in planting Manna Gums, symbolizing growth and renewal, while Wurundjeri singer Claire Garvey performed, adding a vibrant touch to the ceremony.
Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Tony stated, “This partnership represents a great opportunity for Wurundjeri. To be able to stand here today to celebrate the formal signing of a partnership agreement with Stockland is a recognition of these efforts and an exciting omen for the future.” His words reflect the importance of this initiative in ensuring Wurundjeri voices are included in significant projects.
Stockland CEO Andrew Whitson echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the company’s commitment to respectful collaboration. “We are committed to continuing to listen and ensuring the voices of Wurundjeri Elders and people inform our work at Cloverton,” he affirmed.
This partnership is not just a formal agreement; it signifies a profound respect for Indigenous culture and a shared vision for a thriving community. As projects roll out, residents can look forward to a Cloverton that honors and showcases the rich Wurundjeri heritage.
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to stay tuned for the upcoming initiatives that will bring Wurundjeri culture to life in their community. This historic agreement is a major step forward in promoting inclusivity and cultural awareness in the region.
