Hume Council Moves to Honor Ford’s Legacy with New Art Project

UPDATE: Hume Council has just announced a groundbreaking initiative to honor the legacy of the Ford Motor Company, aiming to commemorate its profound impact on the region. At a meeting on October 13, 2023, council members called for a new public art project to celebrate the Broadmeadows assembly plant, which operated from 1959 to 2016.

This project is crucial for recognizing Ford’s century-long presence and its cultural and economic significance in Melbourne’s north. The assembly plant was one of Hume’s largest employers, particularly for new arrivals to Australia, and produced iconic vehicle models that have become part of the nation’s automotive history.

The council plans to install up to six illuminated light boxes around the Fordgate shopping precinct. These displays will feature archival images of classic Ford vehicles and the Broadmeadows plant, effectively highlighting local manufacturing history while enhancing the area’s nighttime appeal.

Cr Naim Kurt emphasized the project’s community benefits, stating, “This is a win for tourism, it’s a win for shopping precincts, it’s a win for heritage, and it’s a win for celebrating some iconography of our old city council.”

Estimated to cost approximately $80,000, this initiative will be considered in the upcoming 2026-27 budget process. Cr Jim Overend highlighted the importance of the project, asserting that it is essential to celebrate and remember the influence Ford has had on Australia, particularly in the northern suburbs.

Council reports indicate that community consultation, along with engagement from property owners, Ford Australia, and former Ford employees, will inform the design and placement of the artworks. Future collaborations with Ford Australia and local artists are also being explored.

This exciting initiative not only aims to honor Ford’s legacy but also seeks to bolster community spirit, making it a pivotal moment for Hume and its residents. The council’s commitment to celebrating this significant chapter in local history is expected to resonate with many, fostering a renewed sense of pride in the region’s automotive heritage.

Stay tuned for updates as the Hume Council moves forward with this important project.
