URGENT UPDATE: Construction has officially kicked off on the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), a transformative project that will power more homes than any other development in the Hunter region. Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe announced the milestone during her visit to the construction site in Kurri Kurri earlier today.
This groundbreaking initiative is set to create 590 construction jobs immediately, with an additional 220 secure local jobs once operational. The REZ aims to connect 1.8 GW of new renewable generation and storage projects, marking a significant step in New South Wales’ transition to clean energy.
The project will enhance local infrastructure through the following developments:
– Upgrading approximately 85 km of sub-transmission lines
– Installing 18 km of new underground fibre optic communications cable
– Building two new energy hubs in Muswellbrook LGA (Sandy Creek and Antiene)
– Upgrading existing substations, including the one at Kurri Kurri
The Hunter-Central Coast REZ is the first project of its kind to upgrade existing distribution poles and wires, demonstrating an innovative approach to energy infrastructure. Local businesses are encouraged to participate in the project through a new online directory that connects them with upcoming contract opportunities.
EnergyCo and network operator Ausgrid are committed to collaborating with the community, industry, and local councils to maximize the benefits of the REZ for the Hunter region.
In an official statement, Minister Sharpe emphasized the importance of this development:
“Upgrading this critical infrastructure is another step forward in securing clean, affordable and reliable energy for households and businesses as ageing coal-fired power stations retire. This project will unlock hundreds of local jobs and boost the economy in the Hunter region.”
Member for Cessnock, Clayton Barr, echoed these sentiments, stating:
“It is a great day when you can announce hundreds of new jobs coming to our local area. I strongly encourage locals to participate in this exciting time of upgrading our electricity system network.”
Furthermore, EnergyCo Chief Executive Hannah McCaughey highlighted that 90% of the ongoing jobs are expected to be filled by locals, ensuring that the Hunter region remains a vital player in future electricity generation.
As the project unfolds, the community can anticipate long-term benefits, including increased energy security and economic growth. Dr. Helen Nugent AC, Independent Chairman of the Ausgrid Board, noted the project’s pioneering role:
“As Australia’s first Distribution REZ, Ausgrid is proud to lead the way in demonstrating how we can play a key role in the energy transition.”
