UPDATE: Indonesian rescuers have just recovered the body of a female victim believed to be part of a family involved in a tragic boat sinking that left several missing. The body was found early Monday morning, floating near the northern waters of Serai Island, approximately 1 km from the site of the incident, which occurred three days ago.
The victim is thought to be a relative of Fernando Martin, the head coach of Valencia CF Women’s team, who was on vacation with his wife and four children when their tour boat sank on Friday evening due to engine failure. The body has been transported to a hospital in Labuan Bajo, the gateway town to Komodo National Park, for identification. Rescuers confirmed that family members accompanied the ambulance to assist with medical and forensic procedures.
The family outing turned disastrous when the boat, which also carried four crew members and a local guide, capsized during a trip within the popular diving and wildlife area. Initial reports confirmed that Andrea Martin, Fernando’s wife, along with their youngest daughter, Mar, and other survivors were rescued shortly after the accident. However, Fernando and two of their children, aged 9, 10, and 12, remain unaccounted for.
As the search operation enters its fourth day, authorities have doubled the search area to a 9 km radius from the sinking site. Fathur Rahman, chief of the Maumere Search and Rescue Office, stated that rescue teams had already located the boat debris and are intensifying efforts to find the remaining family members.
In a statement, Valencia CF expressed deep condolences, describing the incident as “a devastating loss” for the club and its community. Spain’s La Liga has also conveyed its support, with several football clubs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona, offering their sympathies to the affected family.
