URGENT UPDATE: The Islamic Museum of Australia (IMA) has just unveiled plans for a groundbreaking new Community Centre during its Annual Gala Dinner on 18 October 2025 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. IMA Founder Moustafa Fahour OAM announced the development, set to be built on the same street as the existing museum in Thornbury, Melbourne, marking a significant expansion of the museum’s mission.
The new Community Centre is designed to foster learning, dialogue, and connection, according to Mr. Fahour, who emphasized its role in sharing the beauty of Islam through arts and culture. The facility will feature a 300-seat function hall, a commercial kitchen, a library, and dedicated art workshop rooms, promising to be a hub for community engagement.
The Gala Dinner, which attracted over 400 guests, also showcased a stirring keynote address by former IBF featherweight champion Billy Dib and dynamic performances by Jafra Dabke, Heba Tayeh, and Australian International Academy students. This event, supported by La Trobe University, Human Appeal Australia, and Arada, successfully raised crucial funds for the new Community Centre.
In a remarkable moment, a pair of gloves signed by Billy Dib was auctioned for an impressive $30,000, with all proceeds directed to Human Appeal Australia’s Gaza Appeal, highlighting the event’s commitment to both community and humanitarian efforts.
This development not only enhances the offerings of the Islamic Museum but also underscores its role as a vital cultural institution in Melbourne. The new Community Centre is expected to open its doors in the coming years, providing a place where community members can come together to learn and celebrate the rich tapestry of Islamic culture.
Stay tuned for more updates as this project progresses and for information on upcoming events related to the Community Centre. The IMA continues to build a legacy that bridges cultural divides and fosters understanding within the community.
