Israeli Ministers Finalize Gaza Ceasefire; Hostages to Be Released

US President Donald Trump says the Israeli hostages held in Gaza by Hamas should be released on ‘Monday or Tuesday’

UPDATE: Israeli ministers are meeting RIGHT NOW to finalize a US-brokered ceasefire agreement with Hamas, set to take effect within 24 hours. This pivotal deal, which includes the release of hostages, marks a significant step towards ending a devastating conflict that has claimed over 67,000 Palestinian lives.

The Israeli government spokesperson confirmed that hostages would be freed within 72 hours following the ceasefire’s activation. This meeting follows a security cabinet session earlier today, where the terms of the agreement were confirmed after indirect negotiations in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the ceasefire will commence immediately after government ratification. The agreement stipulates that fighting will cease, Israel will partially withdraw from Gaza, and Hamas will release all remaining hostages in exchange for numerous Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Officials from both sides expressed relief as the announcement came amidst widespread devastation. The United Nations plans to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza in the first 60 days of the ceasefire, allowing vital supplies to reach hundreds of thousands of civilians who have been displaced by the conflict.

However, challenges remain. Far-right Israeli officials, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, have voiced their opposition, threatening to destabilize Netanyahu’s government if Hamas is not dismantled.

In a statement from the White House, President Donald Trump expressed optimism, stating, “I believe this deal will lead to lasting peace.” Trump is reportedly considering attending a ceremonial signing in Egypt. The Israeli Knesset has requested him to address the parliament, which he plans to do if asked.

The ceasefire’s announcement sparked jubilation among civilians. In Khan Younis, Abdul Majeed Abd Rabbo exclaimed, “Thank God for the ceasefire, the end of bloodshed and killing.” In Tel Aviv, Einav Zaugauker, mother of a hostage, expressed overwhelming emotion, stating, “I can’t breathe, I can’t explain what I’m feeling.”

As developments continue to unfold, the focus now shifts to the implementation of this ceasefire and the potential for a broader peace initiative, with many watching closely how both sides will navigate the complexities ahead.
