BREAKING: Jhye Richardson has made a triumphant return to the Sheffield Shield, showcasing his skills on day one of Western Australia’s clash against Tasmania at the WACA Ground. Despite Richardson’s standout performance, WA struggled to keep pace, finishing the day trailing by 175 runs at 5-64.
Richardson, who had not played in the Shield since November 2024 due to a shoulder injury, bowled with impressive rhythm, securing figures of 1-29 from 16 overs. He claimed the wicket of Raf MacMillan, who edged a delivery to wicketkeeper Joel Curtis, as WA bowled Tasmania out for 239 runs.
WA, languishing at the bottom of the competition ladder, desperately needs a victory to keep their finals hopes alive. Veteran seamer Cameron Gannon, who took 4-49 in Tasmania’s first innings, expressed his excitement over Richardson’s comeback, stating, “He’s a hell of a player… His skillset is ridiculous. It breeds confidence just having a guy like that on the field with you.”
In a surprising decision, WA captain Sam Whiteman opted to bowl first on a green-tinged pitch. Tasmania capitalized on this early, with Jake Weatherald leading the charge in a brisk opening partnership. Weatherald, returning to State cricket after the Ashes, made 44 runs before falling to Richardson’s catch at mid-on.
After a shaky start, Tasmania faced a mid-innings collapse, falling to 5-128 as Test all-rounder Beau Webster (24) fell victim to Brody Couch, who finished with 3-67. However, some lower-order resistance saw the Tigers set a competitive target, with captain Jordan Silk contributing 55 runs before being dismissed.
WA’s batting response, however, faltered dramatically when Whiteman was struck lbw on the first ball of the innings. The collapse continued as Gabe Bell wreaked havoc, dismissing key batsmen and leaving WA in a precarious position. Teague Wyllie, playing his first Shield game of the season, attempted to stabilize the innings alongside Cam Bancroft (20 not out) but was bowled just before the close of play.
The match is developing into a crucial contest for both teams, with WA needing a strong performance to remain in contention for the finals. All eyes will be on day two, as the team looks to bounce back from a challenging first day.
