Johny Narkle Signs with Cockburn Cougars, Leaving Buccaneers

Johny Narkle on the final buzzer.

URGENT UPDATE: The Geraldton Buccaneers are set to face a significant change as star player Johny Narkle has officially signed with the Cockburn Cougars for the upcoming 2026 NBL1 West season. This pivotal move was confirmed over the Christmas period, sending shockwaves through the Buccaneers’ fanbase.

The Buccaneers announced Narkle’s departure on social media, expressing heartfelt gratitude for his contributions. “Thank you, Johny Narkle. As our chapter comes to a close, we’d like to sincerely thank Sparkle for his contribution to the Fenix Geraldton Buccaneers,” the team posted on Facebook. They added, “Once a Bucc, always a Bucc.” This sentiment underscores the emotional impact of Narkle’s exit on the community.

Narkle, just 24 years old, has been a cornerstone of the Buccaneers, helping secure back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024, while earning the title of grand final MVP in both years. His performance in 2025 was stellar, averaging 23.15 points, 7.92 rebounds, 4.96 assists, 2.15 steals, and 1.65 blocks per game. This exceptional display secured him a development player contract with the Illawarra Hawks, where he has played nine games this season.

Narkle’s journey began in 2020 when he joined the Buccaneers as an 18-year-old. He initially balanced basketball with playing WAFL reserves for Subiaco before dedicating himself fully to the sport. His accolades include back-to-back NBL1 West sixth man of the year titles in 2022 and 2023, alongside youth player of the year honors in 2025.

The Cougars are equally enthusiastic about Narkle’s signing. In their announcement, they expressed excitement about his potential impact on the court in 2026. The Buccaneers have already begun to reshape their roster, recently signing former Warwick Senators forward Cooper Creek for the upcoming season.

Fans will have a chance to see Narkle back at Activewest Stadium when the Buccaneers host the Cougars on April 25. This highly anticipated matchup promises to be a poignant moment for both the player and the fans who supported him throughout his career with the Buccaneers.

As the NBL1 West landscape shifts, all eyes will be on Narkle’s new chapter with the Cougars and how it impacts the Buccaneers moving forward. Stay tuned for more updates as the season approaches.
