UPDATE: Kalgoorlie MLA Ali Kent remains optimistic that new backup power generators for Kalgoorlie-Boulder will be operational by the end of 2026. This commitment follows a promise made by Premier Roger Cook in January 2024, amid concerns over power reliability in the region.
In a bold assertion, Ms. Kent stated that tenders for the project had been issued and closed several months ago. Current commercial negotiations are underway, which she hopes will conclude soon, allowing construction to start immediately. This announcement comes in the wake of criticism from Liberal shadow minister Jonathan Huston, who questioned the project’s progress during a recent visit to Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
“The project is moving forward,” Ms. Kent emphasized, countering Mr. Huston’s claims that the project had yet to go out for tender. The shadow minister’s remarks included a controversial call for Ms. Kent to “hand back” her electoral victory over Liberal candidate Rowena Olsen if the government fails to deliver on its promise.
“You go and win an election which is very close, and you make a commitment like that,” Huston stated. “I would be very concerned from an electoral integrity perspective if something that was promised… is not delivered within the time scale.” He highlighted the need for a reliable power source in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, stressing that the region is vital to the state’s economy.
On the other hand, Ms. Kent clarified that the commitment for the generators was not part of the 2025 election promises but was made in response to a severe power outage. “Every single one of my election commitments from 2021 has been delivered,” she asserted, expressing confidence in fulfilling future commitments as well.
Recent statements from a State Government spokesperson indicate ongoing commercial discussions aimed at enhancing power reliability in the area. As negotiations continue, Ms. Kent remains hopeful that the power upgrades will materialize by 2026, contingent on the timely conclusion of these negotiations.
The urgency of this project resonates deeply with local residents, who are eager for a reliable power supply. Without these upgrades, many fear the consequences of future outages. As discussions progress, all eyes are on the government to fulfill its promise and ensure that Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents can count on consistent electricity.
