The opening round of the 2026 South East Golf Veterans event attracted a notable turnout of 93 golfers in Kingston. Participants enjoyed ideal weather conditions, contributing to a successful day on the course, which received high praise for its immaculate maintenance.
Gordie Fleming from Robe emerged victorious in Division 1, scoring 39 points. He secured first place ahead of fellow Robe golfer Willie Harris, who finished with 38 points. A new member from Kingston, Peter Zacker, rounded out the top three, claiming third place on a countback with a score of 36 points.
In Division 2, Clarrie Squire from Millicent took home the win with a total of 35 points. He was followed closely by Peter Bateman, also from Millicent, who counted out Brenton Pitt from Kingston, both finishing with 33 points.
The competition featured the prestigious Ross Orchard Trophy, awarded to Tony Bishop and Colin Rex. The ball rundown concluded at 30 points or better. Notable prizes were also awarded for nearest the pins (NTPs) to Ray Mathews, Alan Schultz, Brenton Pitt, and Colin Wright.
Amid the excitement, Tim Kenny humorously acknowledged an unfortunate “airy,” while Darren Earl experienced a four-putt on the 18th hole, joining Grant Stephenson, who similarly four-putted on the 9th.
Looking ahead, the next event is scheduled to take place at Robe on February 16, followed by a tournament at Blue Lake on March 2. The season will conclude with the Annual General Meeting in Mount Gambier on March 16. Enthusiasm remains high among participants as they prepare for the upcoming events in this vibrant golf season.
