Kmart Recalls ‘Magic Sand’ Products Over Asbestos Fears Urgently

URGENT UPDATE: Kmart has issued a recall for its popular “magic sand” products following lab tests that revealed potential traces of asbestos. Parents and teachers across the ACT are advised to stop using items from the 14-piece Sand Castle Building Set and tubs of colored sand sold in blue, green, and pink. This critical recall affects stores nationwide, including Kmart and Target, as well as online and through their app.

The retailer confirmed that the sand may include asbestos, a substance banned in Australia. Kmart emphasized that, while the product is being recalled, testing has shown that no respirable asbestos has been detected in any samples. The retailer stated, “The release of respirable asbestos fibres is unlikely to occur in its current state, unless the sand is processed by mechanical means such as crushing or pulverizing.” Nonetheless, the risk of airborne or inhalable asbestos is deemed low.

To ensure safety, customers are instructed to wear disposable gloves and a mask while disposing of the product. They should return it in the original tub or double-bag it and keep it out of reach of children. Kmart warns, “Do not dispose of the products in general waste.”

The urgency of the situation escalated on Friday, when more than a dozen schools and preschools in the ACT were partially closed due to an asbestos warning related to various children’s colored sand products. WorkSafe ACT determined the risk of exposure to traces of chrysotile asbestos is low, but school closures were enacted to allow for thorough testing and remediation.

ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry is expected to provide an update on the status of school closures on Sunday. The community is on high alert, with parents concerned for their children’s safety and schools working quickly to ensure a secure environment.

As this situation continues to develop, it is crucial for affected consumers to stay informed. Kmart has committed to providing further updates on the recall and safety measures. More details will be available as the situation unfolds.
