Local Veterans Showcase Models to Boost Wellbeing at Melton Library

UPDATE: A remarkable display of models crafted by local veterans is now showcased at Melton Library, highlighting the therapeutic impact of creative endeavors on veteran wellbeing. The exhibit features impressive replicas, including the Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle and various Royal Australian Navy vessels, all created by members of the Melton RSL Sub-branch’s scale model building club.

This initiative, founded by immediate past president Stephen Cook, aims to support veterans by providing them a constructive and social outlet. Sam Welham, secretary of the Melton RSL Sub-branch, emphasized the importance of this program, stating, “The initiative offers veterans a creative, social, and mindful outlet that encourages focus, connection, and positive mental health – particularly for those managing post-service challenges such as PTSD.”

The club, which boasts approximately 25 members, meets monthly under the guidance of award-winning model builder Michael Bradshaw. He dedicates his time to run workshops, sharing his expertise and fostering a collaborative atmosphere. “Programs like this play a vital role in veteran wellness and community connection,” Mr. Welham added, underscoring the initiative’s broader goal of camaraderie and creativity.

Participants receive a comprehensive starter kit that includes a model of their choice, paint, tools, and accessories. These models serve as a means of storytelling and personal reflection, often holding deep significance for the creators. “It’s about more than model building; it’s about purpose, pride, and peer support,” Mr. Welham stated.

The models will be on display at Melton Library until early December 2023, inviting the community to witness the creativity and resilience of local veterans firsthand. This event is not just a showcase; it’s a testament to the healing power of art and shared experiences in aiding the mental health of those who have served.

As the exhibit continues, it highlights the urgent need for community support and awareness regarding veteran mental health challenges. The Melton RSL Sub-branch encourages community members to visit the library and engage with the veterans’ stories through their art.

Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring initiative that reaffirms the power of creativity in fostering wellbeing among veterans.
