Loxton’s Karyn Skewes Named Citizen of the Year for Arts Impact

UPDATE: Karyn Skewes has just been awarded the District Council of Loxton Waikerie (DCLW) Citizen of the Year for her exceptional contributions to the arts and culture in the Riverland. This prestigious recognition highlights her over 30 years of dedicated work in fostering community connections through music and mentorship.

Skewes, who has transformed the cultural landscape of Loxton since her arrival in 1988, expressed that the honour is a reflection of the relationships she has built rather than a personal accolade. “I don’t need recognition, but it is nice to know that other people value what I do,” she stated.

Through her organization, Music Alive, Skewes teaches approximately 250 students each week, providing them with opportunities to grow in confidence and creativity. “There’s a lot of seed planting happening musically,” she emphasized, showcasing her commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians.

Over the years, Skewes has played a pivotal role in the Riverland performing arts scene, serving as a pianist, musical director, and composer for numerous productions. Her 20-year tenure with the Riverland Musical Society is particularly noteworthy. “I loved helping people shine on stage and grow in confidence,” she explained, underscoring her passion for empowering others through the arts.

One of her proudest achievements is the Riverland Community Choir, which has united singers from across the region for nearly two decades. “Those friendships will last a lifetime. That’s what makes a community,” Skewes reflected, highlighting the importance of social connections fostered through music.

The DCLW praised Skewes in an official statement, noting that her dedication to the arts not only showcases her talent but also her enduring commitment to building confidence and community spirit through music. “Her dedication, warmth, and leadership have left an enduring legacy in Loxton’s arts and community life,” the council stated.

As the arts continue to play a vital role in regional wellbeing, particularly in enhancing mental health and social connections, Skewes urges the community to value these experiences. “When you spend half an hour one-on-one with a person every week, you build a strong connection,” she explained.

This recognition comes at a pivotal time for the arts in the region, as community members and organizations rally to support local initiatives. Skewes’ influence promises to inspire future generations to embrace music as a powerful tool for personal growth and communal bonding.

As Karyn Skewes embarks on this new chapter as Citizen of the Year, the Riverland community looks forward to her continued impact on the arts scene, emphasizing the message that music is not just an art form but a means of connection and growth.

Stay tuned for more updates on how this recognition will further influence the cultural landscape of Loxton and beyond.
