URGENT UPDATE: Police have just announced a significant drug bust on the Hume Freeway, seizing 40 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of $14 million. The operation occurred around 6:20 AM on September 16, 2023, in Kalkallo, as detectives from the Major Drug Squad believe the drugs were being transported back from the New South Wales (NSW) border.
The seizure comes just a month after a similar incident in which cocaine was found at a Chiltern rest area. Authorities report that two men from Melbourne, ages 19 and 20, have been charged with large-scale cocaine trafficking and possession. Both suspects are currently remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on September 20.
A police spokesman stated,
“Police will allege those involved were utilising vehicles to transport illicit drugs interstate on behalf of the wider syndicate.”
This highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to dismantle organized crime networks engaged in drug trafficking.
The recent operation follows an earlier seizure on August 13, when authorities uncovered bricks of cocaine in a truck driven by David Woodbury, a father of three. The cocaine, which featured images of Shakira and Coca-Cola, was found in three black duffel bags within a hidden compartment. Woodbury, aged 40, is believed to have worked for a high-level criminal syndicate and was allegedly paid only $5,000 for transporting such a significant quantity of drugs. He has been denied bail and is set to appear again in court on November 20, 2023.
The Viper Taskforce has also reported a seizure of five kilograms of cocaine at a Howlong residence on July 30. Detective Inspector Jamie Walker emphasized the devastating impact of drug trafficking on communities, stating,
“Drugs cause destruction to people and communities. They have immense human and economic costs.”
He continued to stress the importance of large-scale drug seizures, noting that operations like these are crucial in preventing profits from being reinvested into criminal activities.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain vigilant in their fight against drug trafficking. The latest bust marks a significant blow to the syndicate, and police are determined to target these criminals through every available means. The community’s safety remains a top priority for Victoria Police, who maintain a zero-tolerance stance on drug offenses.
Stay tuned for further updates as this developing story unfolds. The impact of these operations is felt not only in law enforcement circles but also within the communities affected by drug-related crime.
