URGENT UPDATE: A significant car crash has shut down a 57-kilometre stretch of the Castlereagh Highway in both directions, just north of Lithgow. The incident occurred at approximately 5:15 PM on December 21, at the intersection of Castlereagh Highway and Bandamora Street in Capertee.
Emergency services are on the scene, with response teams from NSW Police, Ambulance NSW, and two Toll Rescue Helicopters, alongside the Crash Investigation Unit and Transport for NSW staff. The highway is now closed between Main Street, Wallerawang and Ilford Sofala Road, Ilford, causing major disruptions for motorists in the area.
Drivers are strongly advised to avoid the affected region and expect delays. Diversions are currently in place for light vehicles and heavy vehicles up to 19 metres. Light vehicles can reroute via the Great Western Highway, Gilmour Street, Sofala Road, and Ilford Sofala Road, while heavy vehicles over 19 metres should use the Great Western Highway, Mitchell Highway, and Goolma Road through Bathurst, Orange, Molong, and Wellington.
