Man Charged with Firearms Offenses Amid Ongoing Manhunt for Dezi Freeman

URGENT UPDATE: A man has been charged with serious gun and drug offenses as the nationwide manhunt for suspected police killer Dezi Freeman intensifies. Police raided a home in Bright at approximately 4:45 PM on August 29, seizing illegal firearms and marijuana. This arrest comes as authorities ramp up efforts to locate Freeman, who remains on the run.

The 61-year-old Bright man faces charges of possessing an imitation firearm as a prohibited person and possession of a drug of dependence. Following his arrest, he has been granted bail to appear before the Myrtleford Magistrates’ Court on October 3, 2023. Police have not confirmed whether this individual has any connection to Freeman.

The search for Freeman has entered its sixth day, with 450 officers deployed as part of the extensive operation. The manhunt was triggered after Freeman allegedly fled into bushland near his rental property on Rayner Track on August 26 after a deadly confrontation with police that left officers Neal Thompson and Vadim De Waart dead and a third officer injured.

Chief Commissioner Mike Bush stated that the ongoing searches are related to firearms, emphasizing, “We are examining if anyone is aiding Freeman while he is at large.” Bush also reassured the public that despite the challenging weather conditions, officers are trained to operate effectively in inclement weather.

Residents in a large part of North East Victoria are urged to remain vigilant. A safety warning is in effect, advising against travel through Porepunkah. Travelers heading to Bright, Falls Creek, or Mount Hotham are recommended to take alternative routes via Happy Valley Road and the Kiewa Valley Highway.

Authorities are calling on anyone who may spot Freeman to call emergency services immediately at 000. The urgency of the situation is heightened as police continue to search for Freeman, who is believed to be armed and dangerous.

As the investigation develops, community safety remains a top priority. The public’s cooperation is essential in ensuring swift resolution to this dangerous situation. Share this urgent update to keep others informed.
