UPDATE: The manhunt for fugitive Dezi Freeman, accused of killing two police officers, has entered its sixth day, escalating tensions in the rural community of Porepunkah, located 300 km northeast of Melbourne. More than 450 police officers are actively scouring the rugged wilderness of Victoria’s high country, battling treacherous weather conditions including blizzard-like conditions and heavy rainfall.
Freeman is allegedly responsible for the tragic deaths of Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, aged 59, and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart, aged 35, following a confrontation at a property in Porepunkah on July 11, 2023. Authorities confirm that Freeman fled into the bush and has been on the run ever since.
Police have received numerous reports of alleged sightings of Freeman, but none have been verified. “There have been alleged sightings which we’re exploring,” stated Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush. “We can’t confirm that they are of him, but if you think you see him, let us know. We’ll explore it.”
In response to the ongoing search, police have relocated their forward command post from Feathertop Winery to a government office in Ovens, approximately 12 km away. “The new site is a fit-for-purpose facility and will best support Victoria Police’s operational activity moving forward,” the department stated.
In a significant development, a 61-year-old man was arrested on July 14, 2023, at a property in Bright, around 6 km from Porepunkah. Investigators executed a search warrant at approximately 4:45 PM, seizing firearms and cannabis. Authorities are probing any possible connection between the arrested man and Freeman.
Additionally, Freeman’s family members, including his 42-year-old wife Mali and 15-year-old son, were taken into custody on Thursday night but have since been released after questioning. “There may or may not be charges that follow,” Chief Commissioner Bush indicated, emphasizing the ongoing investigation.
Drones and helicopters have been deployed to monitor the area, intensifying the search as police remain vigilant. Freeman, who has survival skills, was last seen wearing a dark green tracksuit, a dark green rain jacket, and Blundstone boots. Law enforcement officials warn that he is believed to espouse sovereign citizen beliefs, rejecting governmental authority and the rule of law, adding to the urgency of his apprehension.
The community is urged to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to the police. With the search intensifying and the stakes higher than ever, Freeman’s capture remains a top priority for authorities in Victoria.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story, as police continue their relentless pursuit of justice for the fallen officers and peace for the community.
