URGENT UPDATE: The manhunt for Dezi Freeman, the accused double murderer, intensifies as the community mourns the loss of a beloved police officer. Freeman is on the run after allegedly fatally shooting two officers during a confrontation in Porepunkah, approximately 300 km northeast of Melbourne, on August 26. Authorities report that there have been no confirmed sightings of Freeman, and he may be receiving assistance from associates.
Thousands gathered at the Victoria Police Academy on Friday to honor Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart, aged 34. He was remembered fondly as a dedicated protector with a passion for Batman. His parents, Carolina de Waart and Alain Hottart, traveled from Belgium to attend the poignant service, where his brother, Sacha de Waart-Hottart, delivered an emotional eulogy. “He was my very own superhero. He was my Batman,” Sacha said, describing his brother as a “ray of sunshine.”
As the police air wing conducted a flyover, over 1,000 officers formed a guard of honor for the hearse carrying de Waart-Hottart’s body, which will be cremated. The second officer killed, Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, aged 59, is set to be laid to rest on Monday.
The search for Freeman continues as police scour more than 100 properties in the Alpine region, although challenging weather conditions have hindered their efforts. In a notable escalation, the Australian military has been deployed to assist, providing planning specialists and aerial surveillance at the request of Victoria Police.
Chief Commissioner Mike Bush emphasized the police force’s commitment to capturing the alleged murderer. “This matter must be resolved,” he stated, confirming that all investigative avenues are being explored, including a financial reward for information leading to Freeman’s capture. With more than 400 officers involved, this operation ranks as one of the largest in Australia’s history.
As the manhunt proceeds, the community is left grappling with the loss of their heroes. The emotional impact of this tragedy resonates deeply, with many expressing grief during the funeral and in the ongoing search efforts.
The situation remains fluid, and all eyes are on law enforcement as they pursue Freeman. Updates will be provided as this story develops.
