Matt Foster Steps Down as Broncos Coach, Simon Gray Promoted

URGENT UPDATE: In a surprising move, Matt Foster has stepped down as head coach of the Hume City Broncos Big V men’s championship team, paving the way for Simon Gray to take the helm. The announcement comes just days after the Broncos lost a heart-wrenching grand final 87-81, falling short of their first men’s championship since 2004.

Foster’s resignation marks the end of a transformative seven-year tenure during which he led the Broncos to three grand finals. Glen Milner, the club’s general manager, praised Foster’s impact, stating, “When Matt first arrived, the program was in need of direction. Over his tenure, he turned the men’s team around, guiding them to the finals in every season.”

The Broncos’ journey to success was not without its challenges, including two seasons affected by Covid-19. Foster’s leadership fostered not only competitive performance but also instilled values and standards that resonated off the court. Milner expressed gratitude for Foster’s commitment, saying, “We wish Matt all the best for the future and thank his wife Dara and the family for allowing him to commit to the time-consuming demands of a head coaching role.”

Stepping into the championship role is Simon Gray, who previously coached the youth league team to back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024. Gray expressed excitement about the opportunity, stating, “I’m grateful for the chance to continue the legacy that Matt has established here at the Broncos.” He aims to maintain the strong connection with the youth league and junior programs, ensuring a seamless pathway for young players.

Milner emphasized confidence in Gray, noting that his familiarity with the club and the players positions him well for success. “The men’s program will continue to flourish under Simon’s stewardship,” Milner stated. The Broncos are eyeing a strong performance in the upcoming 2026 season, marking a new chapter for the team.

As the Broncos prepare for this transition, fans and players alike are eager to see how Gray will build on Foster’s legacy. The immediate future holds promise for the Broncos as they aim to reclaim their championship status. Stay tuned for further developments as this story unfolds!
