UPDATE: Lauren Darul, the accused stabber of sushi chef Wan Lai, is heading back to prison after his bail was revoked just two days after being granted for medical treatment. The decision was made during a brief hearing at the Victorian Supreme Court on Friday morning, following a request from prosecutors to overturn the previous ruling.
Justice Rita Incerti granted the revocation, citing new medical evidence presented to the court. “Based on that material, I certainly agree the current plan that was proposed … is not feasible,” she stated, emphasizing that safety concerns had increased.
Darul, who is 33 years old and uses he/him pronouns, was initially allowed bail on Wednesday, allowing him to seek treatment for his complex psychological issues, including ADHD, cognitive impairment, and schizophrenia. However, Justice Incerti noted that the circumstances had significantly changed, requiring an immediate reversal of the bail decision.
The court heard that Darul must continue treatment at Thomas Embling Hospital until a bed at the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s psychiatric unit becomes available. Once his mental health is stabilized, he may apply for bail again.
Previously, Darul’s attempts to gain freedom were denied in November due to a troubling history, which includes 16 arrest warrants for failing to answer bail or appear in court.
The stabbing incident occurred on October 2, 2023, when Darul allegedly attacked Wan Lai around 7:35 AM on Little Bourke Street. Witnesses say Darul ran up from behind, stabbing her in the upper body before fleeing the scene. Lai was left bleeding from her lung and was taken to the hospital for urgent care. Police arrested Darul about 90 minutes later at his housing provider, Unison, where a 10cm kitchen knife alleged to have been used in the attack was recovered.
Darul has been charged with recklessly and intentionally causing injury and committing an offence while on bail. He had been in custody until his brief release on Wednesday and is scheduled to return to court in January.
This latest development raises serious questions about public safety and the management of individuals with complex mental health needs within the justice system. As this case unfolds, the community remains on edge, eager for answers and justice for Wan Lai.
