Metallica Concert Won’t Affect First Ashes Test Pitch, Says CEO

Optus Stadium boss Mike McKenna says the venue’s first-ever metal concert won’t impact the pitch for the first Ashes Test on November 21.

UPDATE: Optus Stadium CEO Mike McKenna has confirmed that the sold-out Metallica concert on November 4 will pose no risk to the pitch ahead of the highly anticipated first Ashes Test against England, scheduled for November 21. With 60,000 fans expected to attend the historic metal gig, concerns had risen about the condition of the playing surface, which has faced challenges since the venue opened in 2018.

Just three weeks remain until one of cricket’s biggest events, and McKenna is reassuring fans that the concert will not affect preparations. “Nothing to do with the concert (concerns-wise), that’s for sure,” he stated in an interview with The West Australian. He emphasized that the weather leading up to the Test is a far greater concern.

Perth has been experiencing unseasonal rain throughout October, with forecasts predicting more wet weather for November. This has raised questions about how the pitch will hold up, especially after the turf turned muddy in previous seasons due to a packed schedule of AFL, soccer, and rugby events.

To mitigate any potential issues, McKenna outlined the plan for pitch management during the concert. “We prepare the Ashes wicket in advance, we cover it just as the concert’s about to start when people start coming in, and we take the covering off it straight afterwards,” he explained. This strategy ensures that curators can continue their essential work without interruption.

The focus on the pitch is intensified this year, as England’s team is confident in their attacking strategy against Australia. The fast-paced conditions traditionally found at Perth’s Optus Stadium are expected to play a pivotal role in the Test series’ dynamics.

Additionally, Optus Stadium is set to host another major event following the Ashes, with AC/DC performing shortly after the conclusion of the first Test. The same precautions will be taken to prepare the pitch for the start of the Big Bash League season, with the Perth Scorchers kicking off their campaign against the Sydney Sixers on December 14.

As anticipation builds, cricket fans are eager to see how the conditions will impact the Ashes series. With just weeks to go, all eyes are on the pitch at Optus Stadium, as it readies itself for an unforgettable showdown.
