UPDATE: In a stunning display of skill, Minjee Lee has surged into contention at the BMW Ladies Championship, carding a remarkable six-under-par 66 during the second round. The world No. 3 from Australia climbed from a tie for 21st to a tie for sixth at Pine Beach Golf Links, South Korea, as of Friday, July 14, 2023.
Lee’s impressive performance featured six birdies in a flawless round, hitting an impressive 12 of 14 fairways and 17 of 18 greens. With her eyes set on her 12th LPGA Tour title, Lee aims to close the gap on Jeeno Thitikul, the current season points leader, who is absent from this event.
Meanwhile, Sei Young Kim, the local favorite, maintains the lead after a consistent second-round score of 66, bringing her total to an astonishing 16 under. Kim, a former player of the season, experienced a shaky start but quickly recovered with a string of birdies.
American Brookes Matthews is hot on Kim’s heels, shooting a blemish-free 64 to secure a spot in Saturday’s final group alongside Kim and Japan’s Rio Takeda, who sits at 13 under after her own second-round 66.
As the stakes rise in this no-cut tournament with a purse of $2.3 million, the intensity is palpable. Nasa Hataoka (65) and Hyo Joo Kim (69) are both tied for fourth at 12 under, while Minjee Lee shares fifth place at 10 under with several contenders including Frenchwoman Celine Boutier (65) and reigning British Open champion Miyu Yamashita (66).
Defending champion Hannah Green is currently tied for 22nd at seven under, trailing by nine strokes after a round of 69. As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on Lee and Kim as they battle for supremacy on the stunning fairways of Korea’s south-west coast.
