Mosque Set Ablaze in Peacehaven; Police Investigate Hate Crime

UPDATE: A mosque was set ablaze in Peacehaven, England, with two people inside during a suspected arson attack that authorities are treating as a hate crime. This shocking incident occurred shortly before 10 PM local time and adds to a troubling series of violent acts targeting religious communities amid a politically charged summer in the UK.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, where the mosque’s chairman and a fellow worshipper, both in their 60s, narrowly escaped after hearing a loud bang and seeing flames engulf the entrance. “They could have easily died,” a mosque manager told CNN, emphasizing the severity of the situation. The attackers, described as two individuals in balaclavas, reportedly poured gasoline onto the steps and ignited the fire, demonstrating a clear intent to cause maximum damage.

The mosque, which serves between 10 to 15 worshippers during evening prayers, is a vital part of the local community. The chairman, a taxi driver who relies on his vehicle for income, now faces significant financial loss as the fire left his car severely damaged. “Unfortunately, just a shell of his vehicle is left,” the manager lamented.

Local MP James MacCleary condemned the attack, stating on social media, “Appalling to hear about this fire at the mosque in Peacehaven. It is used by my constituents and is an important part of the local community.” The impact of this incident is expected to resonate deeply within the Muslim community in Peacehaven, as they cope with an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.

Earlier this week, a deadly attack outside a synagogue in Manchester claimed the lives of two Jewish worshippers on Yom Kippur, further heightening concerns about rising hate crimes in the UK. Detective Superintendent Karrie Bohanna of Sussex Police confirmed an increased police presence around religious sites in the area, aiming to reassure community members amid these distressing events.

“This was not the first incident targeting this mosque,” the manager revealed. Just last August, it suffered two attacks in one night, including vandalism and verbal abuse. “But we never expected an attack on this level,” he stated, highlighting the community’s ongoing anxiety.

Footage from the mosque’s door camera captured the attackers attempting to force entry before committing the arson. “The community right now is on their toes. They feel unsafe, they are paranoid,” the manager added, signaling the urgent need for solidarity and protection for vulnerable communities facing such violence.

As investigations continue, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. The community stands united, but the fear of further attacks looms large. The situation is developing rapidly, and officials are on high alert for any additional threats.

Stay tuned for more updates on this urgent situation as it unfolds.
