Mother and Son Serve 50 Holiday Meals to Homeless in Griffith

UPDATE: A heartfelt initiative unfolded in Griffith as residents Bonnie Molloy and her son Kieran Poynton served 50 home-cooked meals to the homeless this Christmas season. Just announced, the duo set up in Willow Park to provide warm meals and companionship to those in need, highlighting a growing concern for homelessness exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the holiday season approaches, many face financial strain from rising costs of gifts, utilities, and rent. Recognizing this urgent need, Ms. Molloy and Mr. Poynton took it upon themselves to ensure that no one went hungry. “My son and I were just sitting here, and we just noticed that especially after COVID, there’s so many homeless people here now,” Ms. Molloy stated. “We wanted to try and do something nice… everyone deserves a meal at Christmas.”

The meals included classic dishes such as spaghetti bolognese, fried rice, and sausages in bread. Despite limited resources and promotion, the event proved to be a resounding success, prompting the pair to consider making it a regular occurrence. “We’ve had a lot of really positive feedback from it,” she added, revealing their hopes to gather more community support.

The initiative saw its first act of generosity when a local woman donated jars of honey, inspiring the duo to seek further contributions. “We’re really hoping to get some support,” Ms. Molloy encouraged. This grassroots effort not only provided nourishment but also fostered a sense of community, allowing people to connect over shared experiences.

As the holiday season progresses, the impact of their actions resonates beyond just one meal. This event serves as a reminder of the importance of kindness and community support during challenging times, especially as the homeless population increases.

Looking ahead, Ms. Molloy and Mr. Poynton are eager to expand their outreach and invite others to join in their mission. “We want to create a space where people can come and have a chat,” she emphasized.

In a world where many face hardships, this story exemplifies how small acts of kindness can bring hope and warmth. Stay tuned for further updates on this inspiring initiative and how you can help.
