Mount Gambier Celebrates National Aboriginal Children’s Day

URGENT UPDATE: Last week, August 4, 2025, Mount Gambier’s Aboriginal Family Support Services hosted its vibrant annual celebration of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, highlighting the significance of Indigenous culture and community empowerment.

The event drew families and supporters from across the region, fostering a spirit of unity and pride among the local Aboriginal community. Participants engaged in a variety of activities designed to educate and inspire the younger generation, promoting cultural heritage through storytelling, traditional games, and art exhibitions.

Organizers emphasized the event’s importance in raising awareness about the challenges facing Aboriginal children today. “This day serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of our community,” said an official from Aboriginal Family Support Services. “We must continue to advocate for the rights and wellbeing of our children.”

This year’s celebration was particularly poignant, as it follows a series of initiatives aimed at improving educational outcomes and health services for Indigenous youth. Attendees expressed gratitude for the opportunity to come together, share their stories, and learn from one another.

As the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day continues to grow, local leaders are calling for further support from government and community organizations to ensure the ongoing success of these vital programs.

WHAT’S NEXT: Community leaders urge for increased visibility and support for Indigenous issues. They call for ongoing discussions about education, health, and cultural preservation to ensure that the voices of Aboriginal children are heard and valued.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Aboriginal Family Support Services and other organizations work to build a brighter future for Aboriginal youth in Mount Gambier.
