UPDATE: Bowral High School has unveiled its brand-new $8 million performing arts centre, dubbed ‘The Theatre,’ following a pivotal campus upgrade aimed at enhancing educational opportunities. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to empower students in the High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program, allowing them to cultivate their talents in drama, dance, music, debating, and filmmaking.
New reports confirm that the facility includes specialized spaces for backstage production and filmmaking, providing students with industry-standard resources. NSW Premier Chris Minns, who toured the centre on February 26, 2023, hailed the upgrades as “first-class,” emphasizing the importance of fostering student potential.
“The upgrades at Bowral High School, including the cutting-edge performing arts centre and specialist classrooms, reflect our commitment to help every student reach their potential,” Minns stated. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance education in the Wollondilly electorate and the wider Southern Highlands region.
Local MP Judy Hannan echoed these sentiments, calling the investment a long-overdue boost for the area. “I am pleased Bowral High School now offers a comprehensive HPGE program designed to nurture student talents across academic, creative, sporting, and social-emotional domains,” she said.
The new performing arts centre is not just about the arts. Bowral High has also benefited from significant infrastructure improvements across the campus, including enhanced learning environments. Relieving principal Safija Bristina remarked, “This fantastic space not only enhances our programs but also allows us to engage with local primary schools.”
This project is part of a broader $9 billion state government investment in school infrastructure across New South Wales. Other schools in the area are also receiving upgrades: Tangara School at Renwick has added classrooms for students with special needs, while Picton High School has transformed learning spaces into 26 state-of-the-art classrooms along with new staff and seminar rooms.
Construction is progressing on a new high school, public primary school, and public preschool in the rapidly growing community of Wilton, all set to open on the first day of Term 1 next year. Additionally, there are over 15 maintenance and minor works projects currently underway in Wollondilly’s existing public schools, ensuring students can learn in optimal environments.
Deputy Premier and Education Minister Prue Car reaffirmed the government’s commitment, stating, “We are building new schools in growing communities where they are needed most, and delivering upgrades to ensure our schools continue to provide students with world-class opportunities and an excellent environment for learning.”
The opening of ‘The Theatre’ marks a significant milestone for Bowral High School and the local community, promising to enrich the educational landscape and inspire future generations. The urgent need for quality educational facilities has never been more apparent, and this new centre is a vital step forward.
