In the recent local government election, a total of 176 ballots were counted, reflecting a robust turnout with 55% of the shire’s 318 eligible voters participating. The election featured four candidates vying for three open council seats, including two incumbents. Outgoing shire president Dale Douglas chose not to run for reelection, creating a vacancy for both a council seat and the presidency.
Long-serving councillor Russel Thomson successfully retained his position, receiving 56 first preference votes. He will take on the role of shire president, stepping up from his previous duties as deputy president. Newly elected councillors Sally Vermeulen and Morris Trimming secured the remaining seats, garnering 51 and 45 first preference votes, respectively. Notably, incumbent councillor Beverly Smith fell short, finishing in fourth place.
The newly constituted council, which includes incumbents Ian Garstone, Kahlia Stephens, and Rodney Marshall, aims to address pressing issues facing the community. The new team brings a mix of experience and innovation, with Cr Vermeulen stepping into the deputy president role after receiving a nomination.
