A new initiative aims to address the critical labour and skills shortages impacting Australia’s agricultural sector. Launched by AgriFutures Australia in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), the project focuses on five key agricultural regions: the Riverina, Wide Bay, South East Perth, Murray-Darling, and Swan Hill and Toowoomba Darling Downs. The initiative, titled the Strategic Analysis of Regional Workforce Pressures in Australian Agriculture, seeks to build a more robust and sustainable workforce in these areas.
The project will gather data through surveys and stakeholder interviews, providing valuable insights into the unique workforce challenges faced by each region. This information will be crucial for informing discussions between government and industry stakeholders aimed at enhancing workforce dynamics. According to Simon Vincent, General Manager of Rural Futures at AgriFutures Australia, the project prioritizes community engagement. “Every region has its own story, its own strengths and challenges,” he stated.
Agriculture is a vital sector in Australia, contributing billions to the national economy and presenting numerous career opportunities. However, persistent labour and skills shortages, along with uneven access to resources in certain sectors, are straining regional production systems. Vincent emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach, stating, “We want to make sure every part of the workforce ecosystem, from training providers to employers and councils, is part of the study.”
Community involvement is a key component of this initiative. Residents, workers, employers, and organizations in the targeted regions are encouraged to participate in upcoming surveys and consultation sessions. Their feedback will be instrumental in shaping a more resilient agricultural workforce for the future.
The surveys will remain open for six weeks, with the final report expected to be released in mid-2026. Community members interested in contributing can access the survey through the AgriFutures Australia website.
This initiative reflects a proactive approach to addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing Australian agriculture today. By fostering collaboration and gathering comprehensive data, AgriFutures Australia and DAFF aim to strengthen the agricultural workforce, ensuring that it is equipped to meet future demands and maintain the sector’s innovative edge.
